Lactation Hub Temperature-Sensing Breast Milk Storage Bags
The Lactation Hub temperature-sensing breast milk storage bags provide a secure and space-saving way to store expressed breast milk in the fridge or freezer.
Each bag features a colour-changing temperature indicator to provide a quick visual guide when milk is being warmed. A double zip seal and reinforced construction help protect against leaks, while the labelling area makes it easy to record the date and quantity expressed.
Each bag holds up to 180 ml (6 oz) and is made from BPA-free, food-grade materials. The box contains 100 single-use breast milk storage bags.
How does the temperature indicator work?
The temperature indicator changes colour according to the temperature of the milk:
- Lavender: the milk is cold
- Pale blue: the milk is within the manufacturer’s suggested feeding-temperature range
- White: the milk is too warm
The temperature indicator provides a helpful visual guide, but it does not assess whether milk has been stored safely or whether it is suitable to use. Always follow recommended breast milk storage times.
Cold milk is not unsafe for a healthy, full-term baby. Some babies are happy to drink expressed milk directly from the fridge, while others prefer it at room or body temperature.

How to fill and store the bags
- Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
- Label the bag with the date and quantity of expressed milk.
- Tear away the safety seal and open the bag carefully.
- Pour the expressed breast milk into the bag.
- Do not fill beyond the 180 ml (6 oz) capacity line. Breast milk expands when frozen, so space must be left at the top.
- Gently press out excess air.
- Close both zip seals completely and check that the bag is securely fastened.
- Store upright in the fridge or lay flat inside a suitable container in the freezer.
- Once frozen, the flat bags may be stored vertically to make organising your milk supply easier.
Use the oldest milk first and follow current HSE guidance for storing expressed breast milk.
Defrosting frozen breast milk
Frozen breast milk can be defrosted gradually in the fridge, usually over approximately 12 hours.
For faster defrosting, hold the sealed bag under lukewarm running water. According to HSE guidance, the water should be no warmer than 37°C.
Once completely thawed:
- Use within 24 hours if kept in the fridge
- Use within two hours if kept at room temperature
- Never refreeze previously frozen breast milk
Warming expressed breast milk
Healthy, full-term babies can drink expressed breast milk chilled, at room temperature or gently warmed.
To warm the milk:
- Place the sealed bag in a clean cup, jug or bowl of lukewarm water.
- Allow the milk to warm gradually.
- Use the colour-changing indicator as a general temperature guide.
- Gently swirl the milk to mix any separated layers.
Do not allow breast milk to become hotter than 40°C. Never heat breast milk in a microwave, saucepan or boiling water. Microwave heating can create hot spots that may scald a baby’s mouth and excessive heat may damage some of the milk’s beneficial properties.
Important information
These breast milk storage bags are intended for single use only. Do not wash, sterilise or reuse them.
Always use a fresh bag directly from the box and inspect it before filling. Do not use a bag if the safety seal or material is damaged. To reduce the risk of punctures, store filled bags inside a clean container in the freezer.
The printed measurements on flexible breast milk storage bags should be treated as approximate. If an exact quantity is important, measure the milk in a feeding bottle before transferring it to the bag.
The temperature indicator does not replace safe storage, defrosting and milk-handling practices. Separate storage guidance may apply to premature or unwell babies; follow the advice provided by your hospital or healthcare team.
